Weltevreden Park is a small suburb of Roodepoort, which is located next to Johannesburg. Weltevreden Park is one of the oldest suburbs of northern Johannesburg and is growing at a rate that makes it difficult for city planners and developers to continue building new residential blocks.
Weltevreden Park was not always popular. The land was initially uninhabited and baron. The hail storms and harsh thunderstorms did not attract inhabitants. It was in 1861 when the land was first bought and owned solely by the Badenhorst family. In 1872, Badenhorst decided to divide the land into 3 parts. He kept one piece of land for himself and split the remaining land into two pieces. He sold the land to his brother, Hendrick Badenhorst, and Cornelis Johannes Smit. The payment for Smit’s share of the land in 1872 was a wagon, a herd of oxen, and 900 British Pounds.
Smit had four children. Lighting struck the house in 1876 and two of his children died in the unfortunate event. Once Smit had died in 1891, his remaining children inherited the farm when they were of age. Since then, the land has been passed down from generation to generation, with members of these original families still living in the area. Weltevreden Park was initially known as Weltevreden Farmhouse.
Today, Weltevreden Park is made up of townhouse complex upon townhouse complex interspersed between parks and trees. The construction of this suburb has been focused around nature and trees and this has certainly had a positive impact on the overall aesthetic of an otherwise clustered suburb.
Weltevreden Park is within close proximity to the Magaliesberg and the Cradle of Humankind, in comparison to the city center. Emmarentia Dam, Northcliff Hill, Melville, and Greenside are also nearby which gives you options to enjoy the nightlife of the area while on a weekend away.
The East Rand Mall, Apartheid Museum, ABSA money museum, and numerous golf courses such as the Observatory Golf Course, the Randpark Golf Course, and the Royal Johannesburg Golf Course are all nearby. Weltevreden Park is conveniently located to give you access to many parts of Johannesburg’s northern suburbs.
