Roodepoort is a town that falls under the municipality of Johannesburg, Gauteng. Roodepoort was once an independent municipality of its own and it was only in the 1990s that it became part of Johannesburg’s municipality.
Roodepoort’s origins date back to the 1880s when brothers Fred and Harry Struben discovered gold on the Wilgespruit farm at the western end of Witwatersrand. This resulted in the brothers requesting permission to form a mine on the land which was approved in 1884. Needless to say, the discovery of gold during the 1880s in South Africa drew the attention of mine diggers and pulled the population into various small towns around the Gauteng province. The Struben brothers were joined by countless mine diggers who were disappointed when the mine did not bear a lot of gold – which ultimately resulted in the mine being unprofitable. Nevertheless, the small settlement grew and in 1904 it became an independent municipality. It was only in 1977 that Roodepoort was established as the city we know today.
The urban sprawl of Johannesburg has ensured the continued growth of Roodepoort and the once Afrikaans-dominated city has drawn people from all ethnic groups into the area and English has become the dominant language of the city.
Roodepoort is home to Johannesburg’s most famous botanical gardens, the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Gardens. The botanic gardens consist of 300 hectares of grass parks, a natural cliff face, and the gardens boast its very own waterfall. Roodepoort is also home to a large golf course, known as the Ruimsig Country Club, and a smaller golf course called the Jackal Creek Golf Estate. These two golf courses have been linked by another golf course called the Eagle Canyon Golf Course. Roodepoort is an ideal location for those looking for a golf getaway as there is a fourth golf course south of the city known as the CMR Golf Club as well.
