Midrand is a a bustling area in Gauteng Situated somewhere between Centurion and Sandton. Midrand falls under the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality. Back in 1981 Midrand was first established as a municipality in an area which was first known as Halfway House between Pretoria and JHB. Following the restructuring of government after the collapse of the apartheid era in 1994, Midrand ceased to be an independent town. It was included into the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality in 2000 and formed part of Region 2. After the number of regions were reduced to 7 it was included in region A.
While Midrand is longer an independent town, the name Midrand is still widely known to denote the suburbs near the N1 Highway which lie just North of the Jukskei River up to the border of the City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality. A number of smaller suburbs form the larger area of Midrand. These suburbs among a few others are commonly known as Country View, Carlswald, Crowthorne, Glen Austin, Kyalami, Halfway House, Halfway Gardens, Vorna Valley, Noordwyk, Randjesfontein, Blue Hills.

Midrand is a city that is considered to be relatively modern with much of its development occurring in the last decade. Interestingly, many business have relocated to the area as a result of it’s proximity and ease of access to highway links and its location to the centre of Gauteng’s economic powerhouse. As a result of the development in Midrand there is very little break between the outer ring of Johannesburg and the outskirts of Pretoria. The vision of the Guateng Provincial Government is that if current growth trends are maintained, much of the province will turn into city life.
Midrand is home to the largest conference center in South Africa – Gallagher Convention Centre. The centre was built on the land which used to be occupied by the Halfway House Primary School which has since moved near to Midrand firestation.
More recent landmarks in Midrand include the Nizamiye Mosque which is the largest mosque in South Africa which cost R210 Million to develop. Another one of the largest landmarks in Africa can also be found in Midrand – The Mall of Africa.
With all the development happening in Midrand, it’s not surprise that large local companies are moving in. Midrand will serve as the new headquarters for the multinational finance & auditing firm PWC Visible which is currently located in the only skyscraper in Midrand. The lonely skyscraper will soon be challenged by it’s twin – the Falcon Building – both of which are located in the same Mall of Africa complex.
