Meyerton was first established in 1891 and named after field cornet and member of the Transvaal Volksraad, Johannes Petrus Meyer. The discovery of the ‘Black Reef’ drew the population to the area which resulted in its growth into the town as it is known today. The ‘Black Reef’ was a vein of gold that ran through numerous farms in the area on the banks of Klip River. The town acquired independent municipal status in 1961.
Meyerton is located south of Johannesburg city in a region of Gauteng. Meyerton forms part of the Vaal triangle which is a roughly triangular piece of land that runs from Vereeniging to Vanderbijlpark to Sasolburg. Meyerton, located north of Vereeniging, falls into the triangle. This area is considered to be a substantial urban region and was the industrial hub of South Africa in the 20th Century. It runs across the Vaal River. Big industrial businesses such as Sasol and ISCOR’s (now known as Mittal Steel) have processing facilities located in this region.
The Vaal Dam lies south of Meyerton and it is famous for being a large mass of water that spans across the Free State, North West, Gauteng and Mpumalanga provinces. The dam has an area of 38 500km dedicated to catching water and storing it. Needless to say, this is a very important dam as it provides South Africa with 50% of its gross geographical product.
Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve, which is located to the east of Meyerton, is an ideal spot to relax and unwind on the weekend. This nature reserve spans across 12 000 hectares of land and provides high-quality hiking experiences. Another nature reserve worth a visit is the Alice Glockner Nature Reserve. Golf enthusiasts can travel a short distance to the Maccauvlei Golf Club, the Heidelberg Golf Estate or the Emfuleni golf course. River Square Shopping Centre is a mere 10km away from Meyerton and is an ideal location for retail therapy.
