About Benoni Plumbing

Possibly the coolest mention of Benoni is the fact that it was the prime setting for the movie Crazy Monkey: Straight Outta Benoni, which was released worldwide in 2005.

Benoni is also home to the famous internal celebrity and Hollywood bombshell Charlize Theron. Let’s not forget about quite possibly one the greatest Springbok rugby players Bryan Habana.

Pilots were trained at the old Benoni Flying Field. This station was established on 11 November 1940 and opened on 1 September 1941. It was disbanded on 24 June 1945. The station was closed on 22 July 1946. Aircraft stationed here included Tiger Moths, Hornet Moths, Rearwin 7000, Harts, Audaxes and Harvards.

A few quick an interesting facts about Benoni:
1) During World War 2, South African pilots were trained at the old Benoni Flying Field. Since it’s opening days on 1 September 1941 it has been shutdown in July 1946, although there are still a few planes here like Hornet Moths and Tiger Moths.
2) The name “Benoni” has stems from the biblical scriptures of Genesis 35:18 which means “Son of my sorrow”.
3)
The Benoni City Times was first founded by William Hills in 1921.

Benoni is situated on the East Rand of Johannesburg and forms part of the Gauteng province. Since 2000 Benoni has become part of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality.

The beginnings of Benoni started backed in 1881 when Johan Rissik first named the area Benoni. When gold was later discovered in 1887 the Chimes Mine was established which further took to developing the rapidly expanding mining town in 1904. Because of this early and rapid development. Plumbing and Sewerage systems in Benoni were well ahead of their time as the minewater needed to be channeled out of the city into marshlands and reservoirs. These plumbing resevoirs are still in tact today and can be seen at the many lakes where people now fish and take there boats to relax on the weekends. During this time of expansion the citizens and businesses gathered and took it upon themselves to plant thousands of trees in the area which finally lead to Benoni reaching municipal status in 1907.

Since then, Benoni has been expanding in infrastructure and general diversity, recently being the hosts of the WOMAD (World Of Music, Arts & Dance) festival, which is a festival that is held around the world on an annual basis to showcase different talent and artists with a blend of international culture.

Benoni has become a completely diverse suburb in Johannesburg thanks to the gold rush. Benoni has since become more targeted towards industry and services which is now used as a vibrant hub for other town located on the East Rand.

While we complete a fair amount of emergency plumbing in Benoni area, most home owners are looking to improve the value of their homes through bathroom renovations and kitchen upgrades.
